Subject: Poul Anderson gravely ill
Got this from the ASFA list and thought I'd pass it on
This came to the list from Greg Bear, one of RFF's founders and Poul Anderson's son-in-law.
Poul Anderson has left Alta Bates hospital in Berkeley and is in hospice care at the Anderson home in Orinda. His daughter Astrid, his brother John and his niece Janet are flying in today to be with him. When I spoke with Poul the day before yesterday, he was weak but lucid; both Poul and Karen welcome email messages. Their email is trigonier@earthlink.net
Karen has supported Poul with courage and creativity during his month-long stay at Alta Bates. She has prepared meals of many small and tasty morsels that would tempt him when he was not inclined to eat; she has tuned her menus to his dietary restrictions, and provided constant companionship and relief from the discomfort and strain of hospitalization. Poul, not unexpectedly, has shown courage in the face of what was not, at the beginning, inevitable, but extremely difficult. Now the inevitable has arrived, and it is likely a matter of days.
My own loss is made difficult by the fact that I cannot be with them at this time, and that I stand to lose not just a grand father in law, but one of my favorite writers. Both Poul and Karen have provided immense inspiration over the decades to me and to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of others. Please pass this letter to others not on the list, who might wish to express their love and appreciation.

> SFWA ONLINE UPDATE >>> No. 119 <<< 8/1/2001 <
> An electronic publication of <
> Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America <
> Poul Anderson, 1926-2001Poul Anderson, SFWA Grand Master and past President, and one of
the most prolific and highly-honored writers in the genre's history,
died at his home in Orinda, California near midnight last night.
He was 75 years old.A comprehensive overview of his work would burst the modest
confines of this Update. Anderson's career began with the story
"Tomorrow's Children"(with F.N. Waldrop) in Astounding in 1947,
and took off in 1953 with the first appearances of two of his most
famous novels, Three Hearts and Three Lions and Brain Wave.
Soon he began writing his Technic History series, about a galaxy
dominated by the Polesotechnic League of traders, and featuring
merchant prince Nicholas van Rijn. This series led into a second
sequence involving the successor Terran Empire, served by agent
Dominic Flandry.Other well-known series included the Time Patrol tales of agents
preventing the corruption of history, the History of Rustum
sequence, and the Hoka stories written with Gordon R. Dickson
(also recently deceased), involving furry aliens who take
omanticized human fiction literally, with outrageous results.
The Last Viking and King of Ys novel series were fantasies, the
latter co-written with wife Karen Anderson.Notable stand-alone novels included Tau Zero, about a relativistic
spaceship gone out of control, racing ahead in time to the end of
the Universe and beyond, and The Boat of a Million Years,
regarding immortals increasingly estranged from Earth. His
latest novel, Genesis, won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award
for best novel last month. Other awards during his career include
seven Hugos and three Nebulas(all for short work), the Gandalf
Grand Master award for his fantasy, and the SFWA Grand Master
award for his science fiction. He was inducted into the Science
Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2000. He was also SFWA's
President from 1972-1973.One of his last works, "Pele" is the lead story in Analog this month
(the October 2001 issue), and he will appear in the magazine again
next month. Other novels in the pipeline may appear over the next
couple of years.A memorial is planned for 2 pm, Saturday, August 4th, at the First
Unitarian Church of Oakland, 685 14th Street, Oakland. A small
wake will follow at Greyhaven, beginning around 5 pm: attendees
for this are asked to bring food or drink.Poul Anderson was the father-in-law of noted SF author Greg Bear,
who married his daughter Astrid. Also surviving him are a brother,
John, and two grandchildren, Erik and Alexandra. To all of them,
the members of SFWA send their most heartfelt condolences. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to
